Recipes

The following recipes make good treats for training

Treats sold in pet shops and supermarkets are usually expensive.
These training treats can be made at home much more cheaply.

Remember that any treats should be counted as part of your dog’s overall food intake for the day and the dog’s main meal(s) should be adjusted accordingly to prevent the dog becoming overweight.

These treats have a strong smell and taste that make them very attractive to most dogs, so that only a very small piece is required to motivate and reward the dog.

Shop bought treats

The ideal treat should have a strong scent and taste to motivate the dog, be small, so the dog can quickly swallow it and continue training and be easy to handle without breaking up or sticking together.

If you don’t have the time to cook treats we recommend the following for training rewards:

  • Mild Cheddar Cheese cut into 1cm or smaller cubes (mature cheddar is too crumbly)
  • Peperami sticks, cut into small discs about 2-3mm thick
  • Hot dog sausages cut into thin discs
  • Garlic Sausage, cut into small pieces
